Review of Beyond Borders (2003) by Rebecca A — 12 Apr 2011
Dear Clive Owen: I know you have the kind of sadface that makes writers want to kick you like a puppy who has piddled on the carpet, but I would like to see you in a movie where you get A Happy Ending.
Just another inevitably tragic love story. I just can't get behind the fact that it uses those sort of settings to promote it. It makes it feel like the Serious, Gritty, Nastiness which is going on in the background -- which, to its credit, Hollywood doesn't entirely shy away from -- is just a cheap ploy.
Ways it could have been improved? Cut out the love story all together and let Clive Owen be the center of his own drama. If you can't do that, at least give him someone that he has actual chemistry with because Angelina just doesn't cut it. For what it's worth, I like the idea of the characters' reluctantly intertwining stories, that bang up of character types, but the presentation was just plain forced.
