Review of Best of the Best (1989) by J Chris J — 25 Mar 2012
I have read stories about how now famous martial artists, rock stars and athletes were either inspired by this film or watch it to get pumped up for a gig or competition. It's easy to see why. It's pure 80's cheese. Sure the martial artists in the film (MINUS the late Chris Penn - WTF was he doing in this film???) are highly talented but aside from Eric Roberts & James Earl Jones, not a single one could act out a 911 call, let out a deep character role.
That aside, the film is fun and entertaining and does not take itself at all seriously. The final two fights yield spectacular choreography and the films pop culture reference (Find a man who doesn't understand someone if they scream, "POP IT!!!").
All in all you standard fun 80's fun. Take it as it is. Not serious at all. Bonus points for a Kane Hodder cameo in the bar sequence.
