Bernie is one of those stories that is so outrageous, it has to be true. And, in fact, it is based on a real life account of murder in a small Texas town.

The film perfectly captures the small town feel of East Texas (separate from the 4 other parts of the state, we're told by one of the locals). Each character feels like a real person you've met somewhere in your life. Jack Black, though, is absolutely incredible as Bernie. Everything from his mannerisms to his social graces are relentlessly convincing. It's a great change from his normal, over the top style, truly showing his acting range.

There were a few missteps: the film misses many opportunities for humor, and it quickly settles into a character study instead of a black comedy. Also, he narrative structure detracts slightly, getting in the way of what's most fascinating. But the real story here is the hidden talent Jack Black has been hiding all along. Hopefully he takes this dramatic turn and runs with it.
