Based on a true story, it is the "interviews" of the small-town Texas folks that really made this funny. Jack Black nails it as the sweeter-than-sweet Bernie, Shirley MacLaine is perfect as the despicable rich widow, and Matthew McConaughey really should have received an Oscar nomination for his portrayal of a smug, hard-on-crime DA who is completely mystified by the public's unwillingness to let the facts dissuade them from their preconceived notions.
