Review of Bernie (2012) by Dillon L — 17 Dec 2012
The outstanding lead performances, especially those of Jack Black and Matthew McConaughey, carry this fascinating and intelligently constructed film, based on a wonderfully strange and fascinating true story.
Richard Linklater's direction is simultaneously unconventional and perfectly fitting - he stages the story of Bernie Tiede alongside scripted testimonials of (actors portraying) real townsfolk who knew the man.
This approach is distracting at first but by the end is completely seamless, a testament to both the excellent script and Linklater's confident vision. A gem.
