Review of Bernie (2012) by Michael Paul M — 08 Feb 2013
I knew nothing about this movie going in except that it was based on a true story. I knew so little, in fact, that I didn't know Jack Black was even in it. About 15 minutes in, it was driving me crazy because I could not place where I'd seen the lead before.
Then it hit me: freakin' JB! I have never seen JB in this kind of role before. He performance is amazingly understated. Matthew McConaughey has been taking lessons from his buddy, Woody Harrelson.
The more supporting roles he takes, the better he seems to be. And Shirley MacLaine is her old self as a bitchy widow no one can stand...except for Bernie. If this movie isn't forgotten about as bigger budget flicks continue to open, I think Jack Back could be in serious contention for an Academy Award nomination.
