Review of Bernie (2012) by Andrew L — 05 May 2013
This is a great movie. Richard Linklater proves how skilled he is telling a story, no matter what the fate of the characters may be. The movie flows nicely and it is kind of put together like a documentary to fill in certain parts of the movie with interview-like segments with the "residents" of a small town.
The direction didn't have to be anything extreme but somewhere hidden behind the story was that certain touch that Linklater does very well, and the characters shine because of it. By the end of the movie, the viewer will understand why it ended the way it does, but will still feel sympathy towards Bernie.
That task is very difficult to do in writing, let alone directing and acting. The acting was very good as well. Jack Black does a great job as Bernie and keeps the comedy pretty subtle and never overdoes it.
Definitely worth the rent.
