Review of Bernie (2012) by Daniel E — 25 Jan 2014
Feel I missed something with this. Certainly presenting no problem are those performances; everybody involved is completely into what they are doing. In fact, as a person who generally isn't that interested in what Jack Black gets up to, I can attest to the surprisingly impressive performance he gives.
My issues lay elsewhere, in the telling of the story itself. I just struggled with the faux documentary delivery; I felt it upset the rhythm too much to get fully into it. Given the subject, the film really feels like it lacks a necessary energy, a compelling nature.
I recognise I am possibly in a minority, but I must confess to simply finding the whole thing a bit boring. The funny thing is that it has a darkly comical and juicy source story, but the film seems to be killed by its own construction.
