Review of Bernie (2012) by Kevin R — 13 Jun 2014
Too much color does not make one look alive.
Bernie is a super friendly, metro-sexual man that believes deeply in god, the process of sending someone to heaven, and in making people happy. He resides in a small Texas town where everyone knows everyone. A rich, lonely widow whose husband recently passed away is visited by Bernie and they quickly become friends. At the peak of their relationship, they travel the world experiencing amazing things. Unfortunately, just as the widow signs all of her money over to Bernie, her opinion of him changes and their relationship quickly sours. Can Bernie salvage the relationship or will things sink to the lowest of low levels?
"There were people in town that would have shot her for five dollars.".
Richard Linlater, director of Before Sunrise, Before Sunset, After Midnight, SubUrbia, Newton Boys, School of Rock, Bad News Bears, A Scanner Darkley, and Dazed and Confused, delivers Bernie. The storyline for this picture is very compelling and fun to watch unfold. The character development and evolution is amazing and the conclusion is truly compelling. The acting was better than I anticipated and the cast includes Jack Black, Matthew McConaughey, Shirley MacLaine, and Brady Coleman.
"She's my sister, so I guess I should love her.".
I grabbed this movie off Netlix because the cast seemed oddly selected and the plot sounded interesting. This surprisingly caught our attention better than anticipated and I couldn't wait to see the direction of the characters and the relationships. This is a definitely better than average drama that is worth your time.
"You're making it hard to be your friend.".
Grade: B.
