Review of Berberian Sound Studio (2012) by David M — 11 Feb 2014
I think there is a big difference between letting a film have an ending left open for interpretation, and simply not writing enough and just mashing together random elements in the final 30 minutes. Berberian Sound Studio starts off well enough, with beautiful sound design and atmosphere.
Instead of working it way into a profound climax, it just gets muddled and overly cryptic, not giving us even a most basic plot thread in order to interpret an ending from. Toby Jones and the cast does well, but its the unending that feels lazy and contrived, not daring and mysterious.
