Review of Beowulf & Grendel (2005) by Jesse D — 07 Feb 2009
The Old-English Epic Poem about a Swedish hero & later Swedish King Beowulf (Gerard Butler) helps the King of the Danes Hrogarth to kill the troll Grendel & later Grendel's mother. All this started when the King of the Danes killed Grendel's father who crossed Hrogarth's boundaries & took a fish.
Hrogarth spared the child troll Grendel out of compassion but Grendel mourned the loss of his beloved father "Poppy" & kills all grown Danish men at Hrogarth's hall sparing him, the old men, women & children.
This makes Hrogarth slump into depression as he is unable to take Grendel's taunts which makes him lose face as King of the Danes when all his men are being slaughtered & no one knows his secret that he killed Grendel's father.
After Beowulf comes to help the Danes kill Grendel, Grendel's mum comes for revenge & Beowulf kills her as well. Not shown in the movie but from the Old English Epic poem, Boewulf becomes the King of the Swedes, fights a dragon, is mortally wounded & dies, is cremated & buried in a mound in Geatland ( Sweden).
