Review of Beowulf & Grendel (2005) by Ashley W — 17 Jul 2010
An inspired retailing of the classic tale. Beautifully directed by Sturla Gunnarson. The script is sharp and the actors play their parts well. The underrated Gerard Butler plays Beowulf as a world weary warrior sick of tales of his supposed greatness and the always excellent Stellan Skarsgeard as the king Hrothgar who recruits him to rid his land of the Wronged troll Grendel.
The look of the film is bleak and realistic. Practically no CGI is used . The movie feels like across between Ingmar Bergman and Werner Herzog film, which explains the sparse use of music and guttural beauty of the look and the performances.
The Robert Zemeckis version of the Beowulf is closer to the legend and very slick, but comes off a bland compared this version.
