Review of Beneath the Planet of the Apes (1970) by George I — 20 Sep 2007
I have a big soft spot for this movie. As a movie much less a sequel, well it's not exactly the best written or executed you'll ever see. But the reason its grown on me is - if nothing else - perhaps one of the most bizarre (dystopian Sci-Fi) movies ever.
It involves an Ape war of aggression headed by a militant Gorilla Ursus & Dr Zaius into the Forbidden Zone where generations of telepathic Human Mutants have been residing in a buried post apocalyptic New York who worship as their god an Atomic Bomb in St Patricks Cathederal!? it's just weird! plus it has one of the most downbeat and depressing endings for a movie that - bearing in mind - was a mainstream cinema release in its day aimed at a family audience.
It's just a totally mental concept and I love it.
