Beneath The Planet of The Apes is a lot darker and stranger than the original. For better or worse, the story goes to places where you would not expect a Planet of The Apes film to go. Out of all the sequels this is the most similar in style.
While it is nowhere near as good as the original it is still a very good sequel and also a very good science fiction film it it's own right.
