Review of Beneath the Planet of the Apes (1970) by Stephen M — 12 Jan 2008
The first half of this is just an uninspired rehash of the brilliant original. The story only really gets going after James Franciscus has tumbled to the truth of his situation -- namely that the titular 'Planet' is Earth, and that nuclear war has conveniently turned New York into California -- and the telepathic mutant tribe has been introduced.
Even then it's not much fun, though grudging respect is due for the startlingly bleak ending. The film looks surprisingly cheap and the effects work is shoddy, the ape make-up being the only sign of quality craftsmanship carried over from the original.
Hugely disappointing.
