Review of Beneath the Planet of the Apes (1970) by Mark O — 30 Aug 2010
Apes are disappearing in the Forbidden Zone, so they decide to wage war against whoever or whatever is out there. Meanwhile, yet another astronaut from the past has arrived and has amazingly stumbled into the hidden lair of the denizens of the Forbidden Zone, denizens who have presumably stayed hidden for 2,000 years. Even my son asked why street level was now underground. Why did the mutants have what one assumes are genetically inherited radiation scars (or is the radiation still so bad that they become scarred? If it's that bad, how do they survive at all?)? How does one bomb (exploded underground) burn away the whole atmosphere?
The camera work was also a bit overdone, lots of pointless zooms to heighten tension or suspense when it wasn't really called for, for example.
Okay, but not as good as the first.
