Review of Beneath the Planet of the Apes (1970) by Blais E — 24 Apr 2011
Although I'm a fan of this entire series, this is the best & most exciting installment---it was the first one I saw in the theater, so I'm probably more partial to it for nostalgic reasons.
In this, the first sequel to the iconic "Planet of the Apes", Charlton Heston takes a back seat to James Franciscus as the leading man, but J F does an admirable job of creating a strong, yet sympathetic character as astronaut Brent searching for his missing comrade.
The apes (Led by the superb James Gregory as the manic, war-mongering General Ursus-), are on the attack against the psionically-gifted & intellectually-superior "Mutants", human vestiges of a recent nuclear war who worship an un-detonated warhead.
All Hell breaks loose when they all meet! Great performances by a cast rife with consummate character actors of the time--Maurice Evans, Jeff Corey, Hollywood's Greatest Fat-Man--Victor Buono, & Thomas Gomez.
The delightfully luscious Linda Harrison reprises her role as the mute Nova, as does Kim Hunter (Briefly-) as Dr. Zira.
