Review of Beneath the Planet of the Apes (1970) by Scott F — 12 Feb 2012
Colossally disappointing sequel to the 1968 classic, replacing the simple yet intelligent approach of the original with a load of mumbo jumbo. James Francious steps into Charlton Heston as the jaded astronaut stuck on ape-world only to discover an underground advanced human civilization still in existence.
Quite how these humans survived and how they developed bizzare powers of telepathy and mind-control (yet have never used on the enemy apes!) is never explained. What's worse, it destroys the whole mythology behind the concept of Planet of the Apes.
It's s all very strange to say the least and once Francious stumbles upon the underground world, it might as well be a different film. And they say this is the best of the Apes sequels? Oh dear!
