Review of Beneath the Planet of the Apes (1970) by Kj P — 24 Jun 2014
Beneath The Planet Of The Apes did a fair job following up to the first film at the start, though I found there was less to be surprised about or be engaged in with the knowledge that the planet they're on is Earth.
Still, it begins similarly to the first film and the idea of the armies and discovering an underground New York were kind of cool (albeit some not-so-convincing matte paintings)... it's building up to something! And.
.. it's a crazy religious cult group with a doomsday device (blow up the planet because God says it's righteous! HAR HAR). Damn I hate when films have these kind of groups! They water things down to pure absurdity and boredom.
There's a lot of strange... um, supernatural power stuff in this film that's just bizarre without explanation. I'm not sure if the plot was complete ass, but the film is clearly under limitations and doesn't live up to the momentum it builds.
Near the end, I just didn't give a fuck. The ending comes awfully abrupt, but does leave an interesting cliffhanger: what the fuck can happen next? It's not THAT bad and it's definitely watchable with its moments, but after coming off the first film, this one definitely sinks lower with some disappointment.
