Review of Beneath Still Waters (2005) by Marcello A — 28 Jul 2008
A more subtle and atmospheric offering, than one might expect from the exploitation hero Brian Yuzna!
It is not as bust-a-gut insane as his other films, and it revolves rather on atmosphere than balls-to-the-wall gore drenched, sleaze ridden madness (which, don't get me wrong is wonderful, as well).
The film revolves around a diabolic Crowley-esque sect, who has unleashed infernal horrors upon a small & peaceful Spanish coastal town.
As two unsuspecting journalists uncover some awful truths about the town's past, infernal terrors awake and soon the once peaceful town turns into an uncontrolled debauched, demon infested, orgy ridden mayhem!
Interesting to see Yuzna using CG for the first time, and it looks great, just as good in fact, if not even better than Hollywood films that cost 100 times more (what do those spoilt, rich clowns waste all their money on anyway?).
Screaming Mad George is sadly no longer helming the prosthetic make-up fx, but Yuzna has found a worthy heir; the prosthetic make up fx is as elaborate, delirious and demonic as ever!
The Crowley-esque orgy finale is delivered with a euphoric, almost pubescent zeal for the subversive and delightfully shocking!
