Review of Bend It Like Beckham (2002) by Matthew R — 06 Jun 2010
Sure, a story like this has been done many times before, and the director relies a little too heavily on catchy music to convey emotion, but I still really enjoyed "Bend it Like Beckham". The two girls Jess and Juliette (played by Parminder Nagra and Keira Knightley) are just so dang likable, the script is well-written enough to keep things moving along at a nice pace, and while the music is a little manipulative, you got to admit that the soundtrack is awesome.
But what really makes this gem stand out is how the sports formula is used to tackle the conflict between the Indian and white culture in England. You see, this movie is more about a girl pursuing her dream.
It's also about a family that is conflicted between teaching their daughter the proper ways of their culture, or seeing her pursue her dreams of being a soccer phenom. If you're into inspirational movies, this one is definitely a keeper.
