Review of Ben-Hur (1959) by William C — 17 Apr 2009
Finally sat through it.
My thoughts? Excellent, but not a masterpiece. Since I thought it ran too long, slow spots were pretty plentiful. Plenty of hammy '50s style acting to go around as well, only some of it really distracting (I'm looking at you, Charlton Heston).
That said, I loved how the film took on a religious message without really shoving it in your face. The rowing scenes and chariot race have to be some of the most amazing pieces of cinema I've seen, and I'm hard to please.
