Review of Ben-Hur (1959) by Alfonso A — 19 Jan 2010
Ben-Hur was pretty good. I didn't find it absolutely amazing. The plot was a little disjointed at times and some of the actors were kind of bland. But, for the most part, everything was directed very well.
The chariot scene was, of course, one of the greatest scenes in cinema history.
What was more important was the great screenplay. That impressed me more than anything else. The lead actor did a fantastic job in the titular role. Some of the side characters were less interesting and some of the scenes just didn't seem to go very far.
Still, it's still definitely worth a view. For every bland scene there are ten other splendid ones. For every bland character, there were two other invigorating ones. So, all in all, it really is a great movie. Not as spectacular as I expected, but still really great.
6/10.
