Review of Ben-Hur (1959) by Steve W — 27 Dec 2011
This film is epic personified. A monumental and grand masterpiece that should be viewed by all. It turns some newer audiences off with its long running time and pace, but the story and acting is phenomenal. The naval battle and chariot race are very well filmed, with a grand and epic scope of using so many real sets and hundreds of extras.
The great story is complimented with thousands of extras, costumes, and hundreds of sets. Howard Shore's music also makes it feel more epic. One of the greatest films of all time, a huge gamble that would have put MGM into bankruptcy if the film were not successful.
