Review of Ben-Hur (1959) by Ian H — 12 Feb 2010
An action spectacle in the purist form, Ben-Hur is an exciting, incredibly produced, and superbly made epic.
The sheer amount of production levels that went into making this movie is astounding. Even for modern standards, some sequences are unbelievable. Entire Roman armies are outfitted. Massive setpieces are built. Extravagant action sequences are incredible.
Although it is subtitled "A Tale of the Christ", Christ plays only a small part in the story, appearing in certain parts of Ben-Hur's life, and ultimately, the film is the story of Ben-Hur, not Christ. The picture does overall "work" better when trailing Ben-Hur's story.
