Review of Below (2002) by Ann D — 10 Sep 2010
A poorly constructed story with numerous false leads, slow starts, and basic premises that go unfulfilled or forgotten. by the time the film becomes about something, it's too late. I had given up caring.
and the actual plot, which could have been interesting, fails by succumbing to j-horror-style ghost imagery that just ain't scary (to me, at least). the flashback (aka the climax) to the inciting incident was so scattershot and poorly rendered; it really breaks the film when it could have made it.
the acting is all stellar, except maybe galifianakis, whose presence in the film is a nuisance. talk about a character you wish were the first to go...the film is most compelling when it's about the paranoia and the palpable claustrophobia on the boat.
a film that had promise but clearly needed a script doctor- or script hospital to nurse the narrative to health.
