Review of Belly (1996) by Ricardo O — 28 Jul 2010
The film starts with a bang, quite literally, with the fantastic stylish camerawork going around following the two main characters of the story through a club, in slow-mo mind you, until DMX's character blasts some other gang related person.
Unfortunately the film begins to crumble a bit once the story gets going as the plot is cliche ridden with typical "Scarfacesque" dialogue et al. But there are scenes that have a great visual flair that are enough to give this at times boring hood movie an extra star.
DMX was alright but Nas was actually pretty decent for a rapper, it's just too bad his character isn't shown nearly as much as DMX's character. Overall it was worth watching once but I doubt it's a film I will ever care to watch as it hardly meets the expectations many have made.
If you want a "hood" movie that's worth watching, stick to Boys N the Hood as well as Menace II Society. 6/10.
