Review of Belle de Jour (1967) by Helena F — 20 Feb 2010
Extremely surreal as expected (which I like).
Some notes: I loved the sudden and quick flashbacks that help understand Belle's view of the world. Unlike the synopsis I read I don't think it is straightforward why Belle becomes a prostitute, but I guess the 2 seconds where she is shown as a young girl, stiff in discomfort, being fondled by a much older man can add some complexity to the common thesis that she went looking for what her well behaved husband could not provide her with.
The acting is too theatrical (I know the film dates from 1967...) which for me removes sexy of the equation. But is undoubtedly bold for its time.
Catherine Deneuve fits in the character very well, with her angel looks. Michel Piccoli is great as always (he plays cynical characters incredibly well). Marvelous wardrobe (designed by Yves Saint-Laurent). Loved the cats that were part of many scenes without actually never being seen - although I couldn't figure out what were they about :D.
