Review of Belle (2013) by Donovan M — 18 May 2014
The movie #Belle is incredibly good. If you go see it you will be rewarded by the film gods. On the surface it appears to be a movie about race set in England in 1779 but it is so much more than that. It's also about class.
Belle is told that she will not be able to marry a man of status because of her color and also discouraged from marring the vicar's son because he is beneath her. It is a statement on womanhood. Belle's cousin Elizabeth has trouble finding a husband since she does not have a dowry and puts her future in jeopardy since marriage is the only future that is offered to her.
While "12Years a Slave" is blatant and in your face with the subject of slavery, Belle tucks it behind a more subtle story about everyone's place in society. At one point Elizabeth refers to woman as "the property of men".
This extra-large bucket of popcorn of sugar coated, chocolate dipped popcorn is story telling at its finest.
