Review of Belle (2013) by Michael S — 26 May 2014
At the start I thought it was suffering from feeling slightly rushed and over excited to get into the emotion of the story. I was afraid the film might end up being a two bit melodrama, but once the film gets past the first handful of scenes, it opens itself up to a much more interesting and earned depth.
The performances are strong across the board, and even though the script is occasionally on the nose, the acting keeps the story engaging. Even if it is somewhat cliche in the sense that nothings going to surprise you in the plot, the film itself carries a strong sophisticated direction and style that simply raises it above the TV melo drama of the week it's story might imply.
Go see it. It's a damn fine film.
