Review of Belle (2013) by Dan D — 26 Jun 2014
A fantastic period drama, "Belle" focuses on the story of a black woman who lives the privileged life because the law wills it. A slave by birth, Belle wants to find someone out there to love, but her skin and guardians hinder her at every turn.
The film asks a lot of questions, and while it doesn't necessarily answer them, provides examples to the audience of how one could attempt to do so. The acting by Wilkinson and Watson is top-notch, while Gugu Mbatha-Raw and Matthew Goode shine.
It may not be the revolutionary filmmaking we saw in "A Royal Affair" a few years ago, but it's honest and worth a watch.
