Review of Bell, Book and Candle (1958) by Paul C — 25 Feb 2010
Kim Novak plays a witch who casts a love spell on publisher James Stewart, but lo and behold they fall in love for real and she loses her magic powers. A very enjoyable romantic comedy which reunites the two stars of Vertigo (from earlier the same year).
They are both very good in their roles, as is Ernie Kovacs as Sidney Redlitch, the permanently inebriated writer on witchcraft. Honourable mentions must also go to Pyewacket the cat (Kim Novak's character's familiar) and Sybil the parrot! It's also a very aesthetically-pleasing film: the sets and art direction are very striking, as is the lush technicolour.
