Review of Belfast (2021) by Georgeyboy1 — 21 Feb 2022
Well-made film set in the 1960s at the time of The Troubles in Northern Ireland and told from the perspective of nine-year-old Buddy who lives with his working-class family in Belfast. Based on true stories from the director Kenneth Branagh's childhood who spent his early years in the city.
The film has been well-received with some outstanding action sequences and cinematography. Music by Van Morrison is used to great effect throughout the film. Performances were excellent especially from Jude Hill who played young Buddy.
Felt I should have enjoyed it more and this was probably due to the plot which I found to be the weakest part of the film. Reminded me of John Boorman's 1987 film 'Hope and Glory' which I preferred. Watched 2 February 2022.
Rating 7.5/10.
