Review of Being There (2011) by Dan S — 06 Oct 2009
Sad yet poignant, Being There takes much of its significance from how its tale fits the real lives of those involved with its production. I couldn't help but see Hal Ashby lying on Melvyn Douglas' death bed - the director would soon die, his final days much like those of Ben's - played out from the bedroom with many assorted associates flitting in and out inbetween visits from the nurse.
Being There begs to be watched again and again. For me, Sellers is brilliant in the role of Chance - his reserved manner the perfect conclusion to his own career. The biblical ending is profound, muddling, yet beautifully perfect.
Don't let this film slip you by.
