Review of Being There (1979) by Bester L — 03 Dec 2007
The Forrest Gump of its day, saddled with the same kind of avuncular manchild lead role. This movie's philosophy is more situationist than Gump, i.e. it's saying that people are more controlled by their environments than by any internal qualities.
When Being There's Chancey is removed from his given situation, he dissipates. Interesting. Except the environments the movie creates for him are complete bullshit, like a case of mistaken identity Three's Company-ish in its idiocy, and a superimposed love story with Shirley Maclaine.
If anyone in this movie behaved the way a normal human being would, it would all come crumbling down.
