Review of Being There (1979) by Branislav D — 07 Dec 2009

I never knew why Peter Sellers was generally boasted as an actor (I've seen him in Dr Strangelove, the Pink Panther movies, and Party) and I never really saw what all the fuss was about - that is until I've seen this movie: The subtle nuances in his acting bring out the characters depth of shallowness (if you can call it that (I know it sounds kind of stupid :) )). What I mean to say you see that the character itself doesn't have a rich inner live, but you feel the richness of the character itslef.

The movies symbolism goes far beyond the critique of politics and the media, and their respective relationships with each other, as others have noted. I see it more as an ontological discussion of some sort, as everyone projects them selves and their expectations on Chance, Chance himself remains unaffected, much as the material world around us, but while the projections last, he is what is projected onto him.

I could go on and get into the technical details of the film (which I like also), but I don't want to make my review a tl;dr thing (which it already is).

I am sure I've missed a detail here and there, and upon another viewing of this movie, I am sure I'll get to see more layers..

Right now I'll let it settle down, and then I'll watch it again..

A must see movie..
