Review of Being Julia (2004) by Aaron D — 02 Jun 2008
It was with "Being Julia" that Bening was (yet again) defeated by Hillary Swank for the Best Actress Oscar. I enjoy this movie for a few reasons, the least of them being Bening's somewhat uneven English accent.
Perhaps it was better here than in "Richard III" (1995). Nonetheless, the performance is solid, the premise interesting and the comedic antics of this "not so genial" female character do generate snickers if not overwhelming out-loud laughter.
Ultimately, I feel her nomination for "American Beauty" was more deserved. I do look forward to more from this charming and talented actress.
