Review of Being 17 (2016) by Marcovelous — 02 May 2017
Spoilers. Being 17 crafts a simple subtle love story between two young men, who are at the age of 17. I could concur being a 17 year old kid, we were just figuring out our sexuality and we were sort of knowing exactly what we were seeking in a romantic relationship.
In this film, these two guys do not like each other at first, they fight, and they live together with conflicts until to the point (of no return), where they find each other a dominant part of their lives, the best company they have ever had in their lives.
I appreciate the film keeps things simple. It strikes a balance and does not add too many details, which allows the love story to be made just as innocent as the age 17. The film also does a fantastic job of depicting how bad the first kiss and the first f--- could be.
So I think the film truly speaks for itself. It does remind me some bits of Troye Sivan's Blue Neighborhood - I could smell the scents of being 17. Well, but if I have to nitpick, I would say the soldier dad part does not suit the vibe of this film - it's almost an awkward plot change in order to make the relationship work again and it seems like a cliché to me.
Yeah, but still this film is very decent and lovely. Great chemistry. I'm feeling a light 8 on this thing.
