Review of Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon (2006) by Garth D — 23 May 2008
I think this might have worked as a short. As it it, the tones don't match, it doesn't work when you go between cheesy goofy mockumentary to serious and 'disturbing'. Also, really disliked the "horror movie" scenes, they felt unneccesary and just there to pad it out to feature length. They also don't work within the 'documentary' conceit. I also don't like the way they handled the "slasher killers are real" angle. It's a business? What? Didn't make sense. I think they should have gone more the "Man Bites Dog" reoute, having them follow a serial killer, rather than a guy who wants to be in the "business" of being a slasher.
Then, an hour in, it turns into a regular fiction movie? Ugh.
Also? Really disliked the mask.
