Review of Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon (2006) by Vince F — 25 May 2008
Think a horror version of "Waiting for Guffman" or "Best in the show" and you should get the vibe this flick gives off.
As this is the directors first movie, I have to give praise for the competence throughout. The movie had an effortless pace, wicked writing, and heavy "wink winks" throughout.
I also really liked the concept and the first 45 mins were extremely funny. The main lead was quite the cutie as well, I liked her.
Being a huge slasher fan, I loved this, but as is, the movie's third act went in the more generic direction that seemed so off tone with the rest of the movie. A lot of of build up with a flimsy pay off left me feeling a little underwhelmed.
Also if you are going to go in that route, at least do it right, those kills were lame, and really didn't have any pay off. It seemed a bit rushed as well.
Still quite funny though, I can see myself watching this again.
