Review of Behind the Candelabra (2013) by Bryan C — 17 Jun 2013
Would "Behind the Candelabra" have worked on a big screen? Why not. It probably would have made more sense as a miniseries, though, the way it plays out. Soderbergh is one of the best people in movies today (and now TV I guess) who's still yet to make an undeniable masterpiece, but has never made an uninteresting film.
"Candelabra" doesn't break that streak even if it's an unfortunately minor work. Michael Douglas is exquisite as Liberace, and Matt Damon great as his lover. It's a Liberace biopic even Liberace would approve of, and that's not necessarily a bad thing.
