Review of Before Sunrise (1995) by Dan G — 20 Sep 2013
Disclaimer: I've watched every Oscar nominated film before the Academy Awards each of the last five years. Therefore, in preparation of the extremely possible nomination of Before Midnight for 2014's ceremony, I felt I'd go back and visit its two predecessors.
Though a dialogue-driven, 20-something-romantic two hours, this film is wildly entertaining and really breathes life into those who (through time or otherwise) have all but given up on the subject while reassuring those who have never quit.
Julie Delpy is able to convey such a genuineness that one is instantly convinced she is that character. Ethan Hawke, on the other hand, conveys a sort of 80s bratpack-esque style, almost as if he's acting opposite himself- like he's looking into a mirror.
Because of this and his constant quirk-smiling-laughing I didn't feel that he was the best choice for the role. Looking past the Hawke acting I really felt the dialogue was so powerful and the overall feel of the film was positive.
