Review of Before Night Falls (2000) by Ilona W — 22 Apr 2008
Very poetic images! In nearly every frame you can see that the director is originally a painter. The voice-over-commentary is both a commentary of the action and a recitation of Reinaldo's poems. But the commentary never tells everything or too much so you're bound to get all your information from the images. Still sometimes sequences turn out to be Reinaldos dreams/fantasies and may have not happened in reality. This works perfectly with the recited poems/narrations and the beautiful cinematography.
It's the third movie I see with Javier Bardem and I'm amazed by the presence he's able to maintain in every single movie! It made me completely miss the appearance of Sean Penn here, although I adore him just as much!! lol.
