Review of Before Midnight (2013) by Peter F — 02 Jul 2015
Wow, why doesn't Linklater only make movies that star Ethan Hawke and Julie Delpy, cause he always seems to mine perfection from them. The supposedly final installment of the "Before" series (I personally doubt it) once again sees the couple of the previous two films as they experience the joys and irks of modern love.
Still, it hardly feels like a retread, as if anything Linklater and his stars have only increased in their capacity with age, and the film's dialogue is actually richer than in the previous two films.
Glorious chemistry too, and the film is often hilarious and heartbreaking in the same moment, particularly during the masterfully crafted climax. Quite possibly the best film of the trilogy, and a fine way to close it (even if we'll probably see another one 9 years from now).
