Review of Before Midnight (2013) by Ngrncr N — 25 Oct 2013
Before Midnight is easily the best acted movie of the year. Hands down. At some points I was convinced that there wasn't even a script and actors Ethan Hawke and Julie Delpy were just talking naturally with each other.
It's that good. Midnight is the third part in Richard Linklater's "Before" trilogy and sees author Jessie going on a Greek vacation with Celine and their twin daughters. The scenes and the takes are very long, and conversations about relationships, love, life, sex and family are constantly being debated and analyzed.
It's never pretentious and we come to understand the various point of views that the characters are presenting to us. My only complaint is that it could have used with a bit more humor to help distract from the super long shots, but that aside it's a very real look at relationships and other films in the romance genre should take note at the real humanity that's on display here.
