Review of Before Midnight (2013) by Justin S — 13 Oct 2013
Linklater proves again he is an absolute master of the filmmaking medium. I haven't been so moved by a movie in a long time. It's funny, thought-provoking, and eerily similar to some of my own personal tribulations being a father and husband in an international family.
Linklater is a filmmaker of many prodigious gifts, but perhaps his best ability might be the finely-tuned awareness of when to let go and get out of the way. Julie Delpy and Ethan Hawke give absolutely astounding performances.
It's one of those rare, miraculous moments in cinema that you completely forget these charming, flawed, and deeply intriguing people are actually actors in costumes. In a cinematic landscape littered with indy wannabes and hollywood hacks, Before Midnight will remind you why you love movies and confirm to those who forgot why it is they are so important.
Go see it!
