Review of Bedtime Stories (2002) by Gary M — 09 Nov 2010
This was not nearly as bad as I thought it would be. Sure, it is bad, but I think so probably because I, at my age at the time, was not the target audience for this movie. In fact, I only saw it because my younger stepsister wanted to. But as bad as this movie was, it wasn't nearly as bad as most of the movies Adam Sandler has done that have been targeted towards my age group (i.e. Click, Grown Ups, that Zohan movie). Anyway, onto the review.
For those who don't know, it's about Skeeter (played by Adam Sandler) who's father once owned a hotel but who sold it to some guy named Barry Nottingham who turned the small hotel into a big fancy hotel. His father promised him that he would own the hotel when he got older but seeing as that won't happen, he now works as the hotel janitor (i think). His sister Wendy (played by Courteney Cox) asks him to look after her two children while she looks for a job because the school she works at is being closed. After the day babysitter Jill (romantic lead played by Kerri Russell) leaves, Skeeter settles the kids into bed and reads them a story. Skeeter finds that whenever he tells a story, the things that happen in the story happen in real life. Wacky adventures ensue, Skeeter marries Jill, and the school stays open. They even start up a hotel where they name it after Skeeter's late father. Definitely one for the kids. Adults, bring something to entertain yourselves, because it's purely for kids.
The acting was okay, pretty wooden, but okay. Adam Sandler actually did an okay job as the lead character. Courteney did okay, but in terms of antagonists, our two antagonists are horrible. Seriously, you can't get any worse. Well...maybe Radcliffe in pocahontas, but I digress.
The visuals, they're just average. I mean the one cool scene was the gladiator scene, but the rest of them were just okay. Nothing much else to say, but one big ball of average. Nothing spectacular, neither good nor bad.
If you haven't seen this movie.......eh....don't. Unless you're a kid, then it's up to you. It brings absolutely nothing new to the genre, but I would be lying if I said it was completely horrible and intolerable. All in all, an easily forgettable movie.
