Review of Becket (1964) by Nicolas L — 10 Nov 2008
An outstanding film! The movie is worth seeing merely to marvel at the acting skills of Mssrs. Burton and O'Toole. O'Toole's performance as Henry II is especially entertaining because of the comic element the writers added to his character.
The friendship between the king and Becket is a bit overdone, the homoerotic undertones annoying to anyone who respects the actual historical record, as Henry was nowhere near as passive and needful as the writers make him out to be in the film.
The movie will appeal more to those who don't mind--in fact, appreciate--subtle ironies and the cerebral element in their movies.
