Review of Beauty and the Beast (2017) by Tom T — 30 Jun 2017
The challenge with remaking a beloved movie is that there is a loss of surprise and wonder. The vocal talents in the original are superior. Emma Watson does a serviceable job, but brings nothing new to the role, and isn't the transcendent beauty that all the plot and songs describe.
As with superhero sequels, the director has tried to stuff too much in some scenes, creating a visually offputting sequence or three.
I liked it well enough, but was also confused by all the hype surrounding La Fou's "gay" moment. It was nothing much, did absolutely nothing to advance the plot, and raises the question as to, why?
A good rental.
