Review of Beautiful Thing (1996) by Kenneth D — 24 Aug 2008
Utterly unrealistic, but aren't all Disney movies big fat lies? No, this isn't a fairytale, but in a festering sea of Coming of Age films, this one doesn't go out too far into the realm of pure delusion. At least, not until the end. A prat of an older brother, and drunk father are entirely believable. Pissed off drunk girl threatening to out them, sure why not. Escaping to a more gay friendly neighborhood to pull in the woods? Who wouldn't, I see it in Chelsea all the time. But the ending almost just ruins everything. It was a cute and symbolic moment, but come on, your father JUST left.
All in all, a great watch, with an AWESOME soundtrack. Plus, the line about smelling like peppermint lotion always cracks me up.
